In configuring a CCTV system, one should not ignore the importance of the cable used in the system. There are different cables for the different signals that need to complete a typical installation. Video cable is typically RG-59, we recommend 95% shield and 20gauge solid copper center conductor. The use of a poor quality video cable can impact the video signal at the viewing end by allowing interference from a myriad of sources to enter into the cable. One should also take into account the distances involved from the camera to the front end (RG-59 typically is good for 900' without amplifiers). Another method of transporting video signals is UTP or over CAT5 cable, and in some cases the signal is sent over fiber. The camera is typically powered by either 24VAC or 12VDC, and 2 conductors of 18gauge stranded wire is sufficient.
Lastly, if the camera is a PTZ unit than it would require data cable. This cable is either a 2 conductor or 4 conductor depending on protocol. Although in some cases, the data signal is multiplexed onto the coax cable. One other thing to keep in mind when ordering cable is the building that it will be installed into. Most commercial buildings are Plenum rated and therefore require Plenum rated wire. The wire used to connect your CCTV equipment deserve the same consideration given the other components of the your system.
